the city of new york

Keep the lights on…
because the city never sleeps

The City of New York serves the needs of over 10 million residents, businesses, and visitors. Over a decade, I built up a multi-disciplinary team to drive the experience and design of 100+ technology and digital projects, supporting the daily operations of this wonderful metropolis. Designers learned to see the city from the outside and the invisible workings from within. My analysis and design teams created systems to track at-risk children, prepare for emergency disasters, plan an environmentally sustainable future, and digitize dozens of internal agency processes.

nyc.gov

NYC.gov is the central source of official city information for over 10 million residents, businesses, and visitors. The site and most popular functions can be accessed in over 100 different languages. I led my design team through 3 separate incarnations of this deep, complex site.

get married from anywhere

In anticipation of New York State’s passage of same-sex marriage, Mayor Bloomberg had the goal to make New York City the wedding capital of the nation. The City Clerk's Office moved its Marriage Bureau to the historic Worth building and overhauled the entire marriage licensing process, including a web-based application to integrate with the on-site electronic queuing system. The new system dramatically increased efficiency of the process as well as allowed couples to begin their marriage application from anywhere in the world.

prepare for the unknown

The Office of Emergency Management's "Ready New York" campaign encourages New Yorkers to be prepared for all types of disasters. I led a cross-functional team from product conception to launch. We interviewed New Yorkers who lived through many types of emergency situations (9/11, Hurricane Sandy, building fires, etc.) to understand their experiences and explore what would be most empowering to them in that moment. The result was a portable and shareable version of their emergency plans, tools to help reconnect to loved ones as quickly as possible, and easily accessible information to provide guidance during a disaster.

In events that require New Yorkers to evacuate, the public schools across the city transform into a network of emergency shelters. My teams designed the system to track incoming evacuees and their needs, and help connect families that may have become separated along the way.

add beauty to our neighborhoods

The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs is the largest cultural funding agency in the nation – awarding $150 million each year to over 800 individual artists and organizations. My analysis and design teams digitized the 26-page grant application and decreased the multi-week submission process to be completed in a matter of hours.
