teaching in the digital age

Amplify’s mission is to re-imagine how teachers teach and students learn in the classroom. A pioneer in K-12 education, Amplify provides powerful tools to help understand and respond to the needs of every individual child. My UX design team created digital curriculum and assessment experiences across the Math, English Language Arts, and Science areas for over 20 products. Every designer formed a deep understanding of both the subject matter and how students learn. For each project, we collaboratively defined the product vision and design, including periods of research, prototyping, and user testing with elementary and middle school students.

Math Burst is an intervention product to support middle school students struggling in math. A set of interconnected applications, Math Burst allows students to navigate through beautifully illustrated worlds, each corresponding to different math topics and lessons.

Differentiated instruction allows teachers to assign students to specific activities and content that target individual learning needs. Reporting allows teachers to analyze huge amounts of student work submitted digitally (homework, class exercises, assessments, etc.) to gain deeper insight into individual student and overall class progress. We started by challenging and confirming basic assumptions: "Does differentiation work in the classroom? Do teachers want to do it? Do teachers read reports? How can we make them actionable?”

Amplify believes that real-world contexts and captivating storytelling will engage middle-school students more deeply with lessons. In “Virus Alert!”, Algebraic Expressions math content is wrapped into a suspenseful thriller. It is a multi-media in-classroom learning experience, where each lesson is kicked-off by a video, and students get to do math in a gamified app Secure Communicator.
